Gynaecology Assessment Unit
Located on 1st floor in Women & Children’s Building
What is the Gynaecology Assessment Unit
We offer a fast-track service for women referred by their GP or another healthcare professional with urgent gynaecological problems. We aim to see most women on the day of referral.
Please note – the time you will receive to attend the unit is for you to see our nursing staff. We aim to triage you within 15 minutes of your arrival, however if there is a particularly unwell or emergency patient this can be slightly delayed.
The Gynaecology Assessment Unit is a specialist service for
- A gynaecological problem (problems related to the female reproductive system) such as pelvic pain or heavy bleeding
- Early pregnancy problems (less than 17 weeks gestation) such as pain, bleeding or severe vomiting
We are not an A&E service. If you have a problem that requires urgent or emergency care, please attend your nearest A&E or dial 999.
What happens during your appointment?
You will be brought into triage by one of our nurses, they will ask some questions about what has brought you in, check your observations (blood pressure, etc) and check your height and weight. You will then be taken into our assessment bay where you will wait to see the doctor.
Doctors on the unit will see patients in order of clinical need rather than time of arrival, however our nurses will aim to keep you comfortable whilst you wait.
The doctor will then ask about your problem, we appreciate this may be distressing for you and our team will aim to gain as much information from your notes, however it is sometimes best to hear directly from you. They will perform any necessary examinations or test, this may include an internal/vaginal examination and/or blood tests.
Depending on your clinical outcome
- You may be discharged home
- The doctor may arrange follow up investigations such as an ultrasound scan
- You may need to stay in the unit/admitted to the ward for further monitoring
Whilst we aim to complete most of our investigations during your first visit, it may be that you need to return on another day for further tests/investigations.
Our unit is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. We do not accept walk in’s however we are available for advice or concerns on our number 0151 604 7450.
The Gynaecology Assessment Unit is based on the 1st floor of the Women & Children’s building on Ward 54.
