What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding means helping to keep people safe from harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
At Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, we want everyone who uses our services to feel safe, respected, and supported. We work with patients, families, carers, and other organisations to make sure people get the help they need.
How can safeguarding help?
We can help if you:
- Feel unsafe or worried about yourself.
- Are being hurt, threatened, bullied, or treated badly.
- Think someone is taking advantage of you.
- Are worried about a family member, friend, or someone you care for.
- Need extra support to make decisions about your care or treatment.
Our staff are trained to listen, support, and help people who may be at risk.
What is abuse?
Abuse is when someone hurts another person or treats them badly.
This can include:
- Hitting or physically hurting someone.
- Shouting at someone, threatening them, or making them feel scared.
- Taking someone's money or belongings.
- Neglecting someone's care or support needs.
- Bullying, discrimination, or harassment.
- Exploiting someone for personal gain.
Abuse can happen anywhere and to anyone.
Making decisions
Sometimes people need support to make decisions about their health, care, or wellbeing.
We will always try to help people make their own decisions whenever possible. If someone cannot make a decision for themselves, we will work with the people who know them best and make sure their views, wishes, and feelings are considered.
