Wallasey mum praises hospital play team during Play in Healthcare Week
A Wallasey mum has praised the Play Team at Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) for helping her daughter feel safe, supported and prepared for her treatment during Play in Healthcare Week (5-9 October).
Mum Lorraine Murphy said the team had made a huge difference to both her and her daughter, Annabel, age 9, during a recent hospital stay.
Lorraine said: "Annabel has a severe learning disability which can make inpatient stays extra tricky for us. The play team have been a wonderful resource for her and also for me as a parent.
"Clare and Rachael have been wonderful in finding activities, toys and equipment they know will be right for her.
"We have had fantastic support in helping prepare for a particular procedure, with toys relating to the scanner. One of the team even accompanied us on the day of the procedure to ensure the right support was in place for Annabel’s sensory needs.
“I can’t thank the team enough for the difference they have made.”
Play in Healthcare Week is an annual celebration of the vital role of health play specialists and play staff in supporting babies, children and young people in healthcare settings. For children facing medical treatments, simple play is a powerful tool. It cuts through fear, reduces trauma, and gives them a sense of control.
The Play Team supports children and young people, helping to reduce anxiety, prepare patients for procedures and provide distraction during treatment through therapeutic and developmental play.

Play is recognised as an important part of children's healthcare, helping young patients understand and cope with treatment, express their feelings and maintain a sense of normality during their hospital stay.
Janelle Holmes, Chief Executive at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said: “We are committed to providing the best possible care and experience for every patient, including our youngest children, who may need extra comfort and support during their hospital stay.
“Our Play Team plays a vital role in helping children feel safe, relaxed and understood. Through play, preparation and reassurance, they help reduce anxiety, support children through treatment and procedures, and provide comfort to families during what can often be a worrying time. We are incredibly proud of the compassion, creativity and care they bring to children and families every day.”
