Cardiorespiratory Team gains prestigious scientific training accreditation

The Cardiorespiratory Team at Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) has achieved national Scientific Training Programme (STP) accreditation across both its Respiratory and Cardiology services, and funding to support future healthcare scientists.

The accreditation recognises WUTH as a high-quality training environment and reflects the trust's ongoing commitment to developing healthcare professionals, investing in education and creating opportunities for the next generation of specialists. It is a nationally recognised NHS England training programme that develops highly skilled clinical scientists who play a vital role in diagnosis and treatment of conditions.

Supporting WUTH healthcare scientists through nationally accredited training has equipped them with the advanced skills needed to meet the evolving needs of patients.

The benefits are significant as healthcare scientists are responsible for many of the specialist diagnostic tests and investigations that help clinicians diagnose conditions, plan treatments and monitor outcomes.

STP-trained scientists are also involved in research, introducing new technologies and improving clinical services.

Achieving accreditation reflects the dedication and hard work of colleagues across the Cardiorespiratory Team in establishing high-quality training environments and ensuring trainees receive the support, supervision and development opportunities needed to succeed.

Shereen Chow, Cardiorespiratory Department Manager (centre right in photo) said: "Achieving STP accreditation across both Respiratory and Cardiology services is a fantastic accomplishment and demonstrates the dedication of our entire team. By developing the next generation of healthcare scientists at WUTH, we are helping to ensure patients continue to receive high-quality, innovative care supported by specialist expertise."

The accreditation and also the funding from the National School of Healthcare Science mark an important milestone for the Cardiorespiratory Team and WUTH's status as a centre for learning, innovation and clinical excellence.

Janelle Holmes, Chief Executive at Wirral University Teaching Hospital said: "This is a fantastic achievement for our Cardiorespiratory Team and a reflection of WUTH's commitment to developing the healthcare scientists of the future. Healthcare scientists play a vital role in diagnosing, monitoring and supporting the treatment of patients every day, often working behind the scenes. Investing in training and development ensures our patients and communities continue to benefit from high-quality services."
