Children’s Play Team brings Christmas magic and vital support to young patients in hospital
The Children’s Play Team at Arrowe Park Hospital will be on duty throughout Christmas, helping children in hospital enjoy the festive season while also playing a crucial role in supporting their care and recovery.
The team works to ensure that children can still experience the joy of Christmas, even while in hospital. This includes Christmas Eve boxes, visits from Father Christmas, presents delivered to children’s rooms on Christmas morning, and a specially created Christmas grotto where children receive gifts in the run-up to the big day. Festive crafts and activities also help bring fun and normality to the wards.

Beyond Christmas, the Children’s Play Team supports babies, children and young people up to the age of 18 through specialist play therapy. Children are referred to the team if they are anxious, distressed or struggling with medical procedures, hospital environments or upcoming surgery. Using psychological and distraction techniques, play specialists help children feel more in control, build confidence and cope better with their hospital experience.
The team works across wards at the bedside, and in playrooms, often supporting children ahead of procedures. Feedback from clinical teams shows that their involvement helps procedures run more smoothly, reduces distress and supports recovery, benefiting both patients and staff.
Amy Dowdall, Play Specialist at Arrowe Park Hospital, said:
“We work with children who are scared or anxious and help them feel more comfortable and in control. We often hear from doctors and nurses that procedures go better because of our input, and at Christmas we’re able to bring some joy and normality to what can be a really difficult time for families.”
Janelle Holmes, Chief Executive, said:
“Our Children’s Play Team makes an extraordinary difference to the experience of children and families. Their work not only brings comfort, reassurance and joy, particularly at Christmas, but also plays a vital role in supporting our clinical teams to deliver the best possible care.”
By reducing anxiety, supporting recovery and bringing moments of joy, the team continues to have a lasting impact on young patients and their families at WUTH.
