A Wirral University Teaching Hospital spokesperson said:

“The Critical Incident involving Sterile Services Department affecting surgical instruments has now been stood down. This has been stepped down to a Business Continuity Incident as we return services back to normal over the next two weeks.

“We apologise to patients who had their operations postponed. We are grateful to our staff, partners, and patients for their patience while we resolved the issue. We are now working to fully return services back to normal.”

Background:

  • We have continued to carry out critically urgent procedures and time critical cancer-related procedures, prioritised according to clinical need. Clinically prioritised cancer patients who were waiting for surgery have been provided with dates for an operation.
  • All cancer surgery will be reinstated from next week and patients will be contacted in order of prioritisation over the next two weeks.
  • From 17th November, patients whose routine elective surgery was postponed, will start to receive new dates for their surgery. It may take three to four weeks to process due to the number of patients impacted.
