Positive patient feedback for Wirral University Teaching Hospital in national survey

Patients treated at Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) have praised the care they received in the latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) Adult Inpatient Survey, with the Trust scoring positively across key areas of inpatient experience.

The survey asked patients about their experiences during a recent hospital stay. In several areas, WUTH performed better than most other NHS Trusts nationally who took part in the survey via Picker. Picker is an independent health and social care research charity. They work in partnership with the CQC to run the national patient survey programme across NHS Trusts in England.

One of the most highly rated areas in the survey was ‘Kindness and compassion’, where the trust scored 9.2 out of 10, reflecting the care and respect shown by staff to patients throughout their stay.

WUTH was also rated above other trusts for how well staff supported patients with planning for life after discharge. Patients said they felt supported when discussing additional equipment or adaptations needed at home, and also reported high levels of understanding around the information given to them before leaving hospital.

Further praise was given for the care delivered by hospital teams, with patients rating their interactions with doctors and nurses highly. Key areas such as dignity, respect and overall experience also received strong scores, demonstrating the commitment of staff to provide high-quality, patient-centred care.

Hayley Kendall, Chief Operating Officer and Interim Deputy Chief Executive, said: “These results are a real credit to our teams. We know how important it is that every patient feels cared for and supported. The survey results show that our staff are delivering compassionate care that meets individual needs and leaves a positive impression.”

Sam Westwell, Chief Nurse at WUTH, added: “I’d like to thank all of our staff across the Trust for their professionalism and dedication. Whether it's the kindness shown on the ward or the clarity given at discharge, these results reflect the care and commitment we see every day.”

The survey is based on feedback from over 330 patients who stayed at Arrowe Park or Clatterbridge Hospital in 2024. While the overall results were positive, the survey also gave valuable insight into areas where improvements can be made and these insights will help shape future actions to enhance patient experience.
