Hope, Healing and Discovery: WUTH Marks International Clinical Trials Day by Celebrating Life-Changing Research

In celebration of International Clinical Trials Day on 20th May 2025, Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) is shining a light on the life-changing power of medical research—inviting more people to consider taking part.

Every year, thousands of people across the UK volunteer for clinical trials, helping to develop new treatments and improve outcomes for future patients.

Julie Grindey, Research Midwife, said: “Some of the people who have taken part in research have found real hope. One participant who had suffered four miscarriages joined the ALIFE2 trial, which tested whether a medicine could improve pregnancy outcomes for women with blood clotting disorders. It was wonderful when she gave birth to a healthy daughter.”

WUTH, a research-active hospital, is proud to play a role in shaping the future of medicine. Patients involved in research at WUTH benefit from early access to new treatments, frequent monitoring, and a profound sense of contributing to something bigger than themselves.

In 2024, WUTH further strengthened its research capabilities by opening the Wirral Research and Innovation Centre in Clatterbridge. With support from the NIHR North West Coast, the new centre provides a dedicated, patient-friendly space for clinical trials—with free parking and a streamlined experience.

Janelle Holmes, Chief Executive of WUTH, said: “We know that hospitals that carry out research have better health outcomes for their patients. That’s why we’ve invested in the Wirral Research and Innovation Centre—to increase both the breadth and volume of studies for the benefit of our community.

“I want to thank all our participants whose courage and commitment help us discover the treatments of tomorrow.”
