Elective Placements at WUTH

In UK medical schools, an elective placement is a short-term, self-arranged clinical placement, usually undertaken by students in their final or penultimate year. Students can choose a specialty, location (either in the UK or abroad), and the type of experience, such as a specific clinical area or research. The goal is to gain hands-on experience in a different healthcare setting, develop skills, and explore career interests.

Placements typically last between 6 and 12 weeks, but the exact duration and timing depend on the individual medical school.

It is a flexible part of the medical curriculum, allowing students to tailor their learning, however there is often a set of learning outcomes or requirements to be met.

Students are responsible for finding and organizing their elective placement, though their medical school may provide guidance and support.
