Transparent Face Masks

Transparent Face Masks

The Patient Experience Strategy Inclusive Promise group has a dedicated task and finish group for Deaf Awareness. Their goal is to enhance communication for Deaf and hard of hearing patients, and we have made significant progress in achieving this objective.

One of the key challenges we identified was the difficulty faced by patients when communicating with healthcare professionals wearing traditional facemasks. Transparent facemasks were introduced, but they had their limitations, including frequent movement and fogging, which hindered effective communication.

To find a suitable solution, we reached out to the Deaf and hard of hearing community and organised a collaborative effort. Several transparent masks available on the market were evaluated by this group, and after careful consideration, the mask included in this pack received unanimous approval from all voters.

To ensure the mask meets essential health and safety requirements, Infection Prevention Control (IPC) conducted a thorough review. We are pleased to announce that the mask has been deemed compliant and effective for use.

In line with our commitment to improving patient experiences, we have distributed samples of this mask to all departments and wards at WUTH. Our aim is to enable effective communication for individuals with hearing impairments whenever required.

By embracing this Deaf Awareness Initiative, we are taking a significant step forward in creating an inclusive healthcare environment. Let us work together to enhance communication and ensure that all patients receive the highest standard of care.
