Pregnancy Counselling and Termination Service

We provide a termination of pregnancy service, which includes advice to women who have not yet decided whether to continue their pregnancy.

Whatever your decision about the pregnancy, we can link you in to local support services if required.

Services Available

We provide a medical termination of pregnancy (termination of pregnancy using tablets) for women less than 9 weeks pregnant.

If at the appointment you are found to be more than 9 weeks pregnant we will recommend a surgical (operation) termination of pregnancy which can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic. You will need to return for this procedure, usually within 7 days of your appointment.

Medical termination of pregnancy is a two stage process with two different tablets administered 1-3 days apart, and both must be administered in the hospital. The first tablets are taken by mouth after which you can go home with an appointment to return for the second type of tablets in 1-3days. The second tablets are inserted at this appointment vaginally by a doctor or nurse. Most women will be given the option of going home at this point to complete the medical termination at home.

Routine Investigations:
Women will be seen by a doctor and a specialist nurse and will have an ultrasound scan performed to confirm how many weeks pregnant they are, and to make sure the pregnancy is normal. If we cannot be sure that the pregnancy is normal (more likely if the pregnancy is very early) then we may need to delay the termination by a week following a further ultrasound scan.

Blood tests will be taken and you can discuss what contraception you wish to use in future.

A Chlamydia screen on a urine specimen is offered and recommended to all women. HIV tests are also available.
