Hospital food donation points for Wirral Foodbank

Food donation points have been set up at Wirral University Teaching Hospital to help Wirral Foodbank feed families on the breadline over the summer holidays.

The hospital trust is asking people to come together and offer support as Wirral Foodbank faces a record high demand this year.

Donation points will be in place for six weeks over the school summer holidays as families face extra financial pressure to provide meals, especially those reliant on free school meals.

Richard Roberts, Wirral Foodbank Manager, said: “We’re 20 per cent up on this time last year in terms of demand for our food bank so this support is incredible. That means we can now meet the needs of those who come into our foodbanks on a daily basis. A lot of those people are single-parent families with children.

“Since September last year we’ve had to spend £7,500 on food. We’ve never had to spend that much and we can’t sustain that. We have to find 150 tonnes of food a year. Most of that is through personal donations. Any additional support in providing food to people in the Wirral is amazing.”

Staff and members of the public can donate to the food deposit points, which are outside the main lifts at Arrowe Park Hospital, in Bowman’s Restaurant at Arrowe Park Hospital and at Firtrees Restaurant at Clatterbridge Hospital.

Anthony Middleton, Chief Operating Officer, said: “As a family hospital, we are at the heart of the community and it is important that we are all working together to support local people who need help.

“Many families will be feeling the strain at this time of year and these food donations can make a huge difference to people’s lives.

“A lot of hospital staff have already made food donations so a big thank you to them for their generosity. Staff and visitors are free to add their donations and there is a checklist on the deposit points of items the food bank urgently needs.”

The items urgently needed include: Tinned meat, tinned fish, pasta sauce, coffee, sponge puddings, cereal, packet soup, long grain rice, toothpaste, UHT milk and custard.
