How many items can I borrow?

Staff employed by the following organisations may borrow 12 items.

  • Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust

Students on placement from these organisations may borrow 5 items.

What can I borrow?

Books, DVDs and CDs are available for loan. We also have Display Boards and Laptops.

How can I borrow and return items?

To borrow items you need to bring these to the library counter along with your library barcode (usually placed on the back of your staff/ student card). Our staff can then loan these out to you. The library counter is staffed 9-5 Monday to Friday.

If you would like to loan books this can be done at the library counter or by using the self service machine.

To loan books on self service;

  • Press ‘Borrow’
  • Scan the Barcode on back of your card
  • Place your books in the black square one at a time.
  • When all are scanned check the due dates then press the green ‘Done’
  • Remember to print a receipt (just in case!)
  • See the example video below!

How long can I borrow items for?

Most books are loaned for 4 weeks.
Some books such as examination books and popular books are loaned for 1 week.

Our laptops are 24 Hour loans.

What if I want to renew my items?

You can renew items in person, by telephone or by e-mail, up to a maximum of three times, provided no other user has requested the items you have on loan.
When your item has been renewed the maximum number of times, it must be physically returned to the library. An item can then be re-issued to you when it has been seen by library staff.
You may not renew an item which has been reserved by another user. If you fail to return a reserved item on a ‘Standard Loan’ of 4 weeks within 10 days of its’ due date, you will be charged £10.00. If you fail to return an item on a ‘7 day Loan’ within 5 days of its’ due date, you will be charged £10.00. This policy helps us to manage our stock and is beneficial to all library users.

If you would like to renew books which have not been renewed the maximum number of times and have not been reserved you can also use the self service machine.

To return your book by self service;

  • Press ‘Return’
  • Place your books in the black square one at a time.
  • After you scan a book place it on the trolley to the right of the machine.
  • When all books are returned press the green ‘Done’ and then print a receipt.

What if I am late returning my library items?

Emails and letters are sent out to chase any overdue items. If an item is 6 weeks overdue, any further loans will be stopped. If an item is 8 weeks overdue, you will be billed for the replacement cost of the book.

What if I want to reserve an item?

If you find an item you want on the Library Catalogue but it is out on loan, ask the library staff to place a reservation for you, or reserve it yourself using the Library Catalogue. Once the reservation is made, the person who has the book will be sent a recall notice asking them to return it on its' due date. We will let you know when the book is ready for you to collect. If you receive a recall notice asking you to return a book for another reader to use, please return it promptly.

What if my circumstances change?

Please let us know immediately if you change any of the following: Name, home address, department, employment status (i.e. if you become a permanent member of staff or extend your fixed term contract).

What happens if I lose a book?

If you lose a book you will asked to pay for the replacement cost i.e. the current price of a new copy of the book. You will also be asked to pay an administration charge of £2.00.

If the book is found again, you may either keep the book or, if the book is still in good condition, return it to the library.
