Research Department

Our NHS Trust actively supports and encourages research. We currently have over 60 research studies open and during 2016/17 over 700 patients participated in a wide variety of studies.

Many of our doctors engage in research and they are supported by a team of 12 research nurses, a research midwife and the administrative staff based within the Research Department.

Information for Patients and Carers

Research is vital in order to provide evidence to improve treatment for patients within our care. If your doctor is in agreement, you may be invited to participate whilst you are a patient at one of our hospitals.  Detailed information will be provided to enable you to make an informed decision about deciding to participate.

You will be provided with the following:

  • a full explanation of the study by your doctor or nurse
  • a full explanation of potential benefits (or risks) of participating in the study
  • a copy of the Patient Information Sheet
  • sufficient time to allow you to make an informed decision to participate in the study, including time to talk about the study with family or friends
  • sufficient time to allow you to ask any additional questions that you may have
  • a Patient Consent Form to sign to confirm that you understand the study and wish to participate
  • an understanding that you can withdraw, at any time, from the study without compromising your care.

All research within our Trust will have received the appropriate regulatory approvals prior to the research starting.

Types of research available

We ask suitable patients to participate in different types of research within the trust. The types of research can vary from a clinical trial (to test a new drug or to test a licensed drug in a different way), to asking patients to complete a simple questionnaire regarding their quality of life.  We undertake research that is sponsored by national charities, academic institutions or pharmaceutical companies.

During 2016/17 we recruited 741 participants to NIHR research studies.

Specialities involved in research within the trust

The following specialities are currently involved in research within the trust:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular
  • Critical Care
  • Dermatology
  • Elderly Medicine
  • Haematology
  • Injuries & Emergencies
  • Neonates
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Paediatrics
  • Reproductive Health
  • Respiratory
  • Rheumatology
  • Stroke
  • Surgery
  • Urology

(This list changes from time to time due to the availability of suitable studies for our patients)

Research on healthy volunteers

This hospital does not routinely undertake research on healthy volunteers. However, occasionally we may participate in a research project which invites patients’ relatives (healthy volunteers), to take part. For example, the daughter of a patient with breast cancer may be offered the opportunity to be screened to see if she has a ‘familial gene’ that may predispose her to the condition. Additionally, patients’ carers and relatives may be asked about their experience whilst visiting the hospital.

Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)

If you are a patient, carer, or a member of public with an interest, you can help research by becoming more actively involved and having a say.  The NHS National Institute for Health Research offers further details about research. Click here to be taken to their website.

Commercial Research

We participate in a wide variety of commercial research. Many of our commercial studies have been adopted onto the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) portfolio but we do however undertake commercial studies that have not been adopted onto the NIHR portfolio.  We are always interested in working with new commercial partners.  If you wish to see a copy of our NIHR R&D Capability Statement please contact the Research Manager.

The Trust encourages the use of model Clinical Trial Agreements for research and the use of the NIHR Industry Costing Template.

NIHR Performance in Initiating and Delivering Clinical Research

The Government wishes to see a dramatic and sustained improvement in the performance of all providers of NHS services in initiating and delivering clinical research. The aim is to increase the number of patients who have the opportunity to participate in research and to enhance the nation’s attractiveness as a host for research.

Since October 2014 the Trust has produced quarterly returns to the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) on its performance in two key areas:

  • Initiating clinical research
  • Delivering commercial contract clinical research to time and target

Copies of reports are within the tabs below.  More information about this can be found via this link or by contacting Paula Brassey, Research Manager.
