Palliative and End of Life Care

Access to the Specialist Palliative Care service is on the basis of need not diagnosis. It is available not exclusively for patients with cancer but also to those with life-limiting non-malignant diseases. The aim of the team is to:

  • support the patient in control of pain and other symptoms whilst offering emotional support, relevant information and active referral and signposting pathways at what can be a very distressing time
  • integrate the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
  • provide support early in the course of an illness in conjunction with other treatments
  • offer a support system to help patients to live as actively as possible until death and to help the family to cope during the patient’s illness and in their own bereavement
  • provide an educational programme for hospital and community staff.

The Specialist Palliative Care Team provides an advisory and supportive service whilst the medical and nursing management of the patient remains the responsibility of the ward team.

We provide ward support, outpatient clinics and home visits that are designed to facilitate the transfer of the patient from the curative to the palliative approach of their incurable illness. Provision to specialist palliative care beds are located at Wirral Hospice St Johns on our Clatterbridge Hospital site.
