Whilst every effort is made to ensure enough capacity is available to see all patients there are occasions when appointment slots are unavailable. In this situation please use the 'defer to provider' functionality within Choose and Book. We will be notified and contact the patient within four days to arrange a suitable appointment. 

 

Referring patients

Our Trust recognises, supports and encourages the use of the national Choose and Book system for receiving referrals for outpatient appointments (including fast track breast referrals). 

Choose and Book provides a full directory of all the secondary care services available under Free Choice via the Directory of Services as well as those services locally commissioned by the Clinical Commissioning Group. 

GPs and practice staff can direct the patient to use the Choose and Book telephone appointments line or the internet where they are able to complete the booking themselves. This also identifies location of services and an indicative waiting time. 

You can access service-specific guidance to help shortlist the most appropriate services and highlight any helpful preliminary investigations. Advice and guidance from specialists can be sought prior to referral, supporting the development of better referral pathways and closer collaboration with secondary care colleagues. 

Increased referral security

The system gives patients confidence that the referral information reaches the hospital.

GPs and practice staff can track the progress of a patient’s referral through Choose and Book. The information is protected by a series of stringent access controls and information governance.  

No appointments visible for booking?

Other referrals

Our preference is for all referrals to be made through Choose and Book but in circumstances when this is not possible please send all referrals to the Wirral Booking Service.

Helpful Suggestions

The Choose and Book service works best and most effectively if the following advice is followed:

2WW referrals (other than breast referral)

Some practices give the patient the UBRN Booking information to takeaway but the patient does not telephone immediately.

Will practices telephone the 2WW appointment line on 0151 604 7720 to book the patient’s appointment. 

Out of hours please fax the referral with the UBRN clearly noted and we will contact the patient the next working day.

Named Clinician

Named Clinician facility on Choose and Book is to be used for either continuity of care or because the Consultant is a particular specialist in the problem being referred. If this is the first referral and the named clinician facility is not required please do not add a Consultant name to the referral letter.

Choice of Service

Please choose more than one hospital site, where available (there is a choice of up to four) only choosing one hospital location will limit the patients’ choice of appointment.

Telephone Contact

Please ensure you supply a correct and up to date telephone contact on all referrals.
